As We Look To the Future (January 2000)
January the first month of the new year, is that month in which we always look to the future with plans and expectations, as well as back with remembrances and reflection. Appropriately, it is named for Janus, the ancient Roman god of gates and doorways who is often depicted with two faces looking in opposite directions. IThis January, as we enter the new year (and the new millennium), let us continue looking forward in carrying out the prograin of our Grand Master, MWB Bill R. Wood, while at the same time, looking back to reflect how we can do better. In doing so, we will surely continue to "do good unto all."
Two particulal aspects of the Grand Master's program seem quite timely to review at this time: The "Friend to Friend" brochure, and the Washington Masonic VISA Card. (Please note, the following information is not mine, but is largely taken from the published materials that describe the two programs.)
The "Friend to Friend" brochure, available from the Grand Lodge, is designed to help explain what Freemasonry is, who Freemasons are, what they believe in, what they do, qualifications for membership, and why your friend asked you to read this brochure.
The old days of complete secrecy are long gone, but many still find it hard to open a conversation with a neighbor, or even a relative, about Masonry. They maybe know we are involved, but are waiting to be asked, or at least learn something about the subject.
Here's how it works: Give the "Friend to Friend" brochure to someone YOU think would be a good member. Ask him to read it and return it to you within one week. If he does, ask him if he would like more information. Generally, you will get either a YES - I want to know more, or no, I am not interested.
If he says yes, you can get a petition from the Secretary, invite one of your officers or other members to visit with him and get acquainted. IT WORKS and many other Grand Lodges are using it to good effect.
DO IT TODAY - for Masonry, and yourself. It is a message of kindness ...from "FRIEND TO FRIEND."
The Washington Masonic VISA Card: Finally, a VISA Card exclusively for Washington Masons and their families. And, best of all, the Grand Lodge will benefit from every purchase you make using your Washington Masonic VISA Card!
With a Masonic VISA Card you receive: Low 7.9% APR; NoAnnual Fee; 25 Day Grace Period; "Scorecard" Points for free travel and gifts; Discount Travel Reservation Service; Common carrier travel accident insurance; and, Auto Rental Discounts.
You can transfer your high cost account balances from other cards and save with the Washington Masonic VISA low 7.9% rate. And, every time you use it, you will save money and also help support the Grand Lodge! Ask your Lodge Secretary for a Washington Masonic VISA Card application form.
Now is also a good time to offer overdue recognition and CONGRATULATIONS to the following Brethren from District 4 who have been appointed by the Grand Master to serve this year's Grand Lodge Team:
Dale E.Boudreau (149), Masonic Research and Education Committee;
lan C. Hyde (239), Code Commission Committee:
Alfred J. Luberts, Jr. (149), Masonic Internal Communications Committee;
Donald W. McAmmond (72), Chairman, Masonic Internal Communications Committee;
Philip P. Nylin (72), Masonic Float Committee;
Kenneth S. Robinson (72), Trustee of the Masonic Retirement Center;
M. Gene Ross (239), Public Schools Committee;
Jerry M. Schor (72), Masonic Home Endowment Committee; and,
Carl B. Smith (279), Jurisprudence Committee.
This January, as we look to the future with plans and expectations, remember also that we can continue to "do good unto all" by expanding our membership with the "Friend to Friend" brochure, taking advantage of the Washington Masonic VISA Card that will benefit the Grand Lodge, and giving deserved recognition to the Brethren who are serving this year's Grand Lodge Team.
