Our Community Lodges (February 2001)
About this time last year, I made some observations on where the Masters and Wardens of the Lodges in District Four live relative to where their respective Lodges meet. This led to my presumption that the same can be held to be true for where the general membership lives relative to their respective Lodges.Of particular significance to all of this is the revealing acknowledgment that our urban Seattle Lodges are no longer "neighborhood Lodges" but are in reality overlapping "community Lodges"
Armed with this understanding, perhaps we can develop more effective ways of being involved in community programs, thereby not only attracting new members, but keeping them purposefully active once they have been made a Mason.
Quite similar to last year, more Masters and Wardens live outside of Seattle than in it. And again, most of them come from Snohomish County. Eight of the 18 live in Snohomish County (almost half), five live in Seattle (less than one third), three live in either North or East King County (almost 20%), and two commute from other counties — Kitsap and Pierce (about 10%).
Interestingly, even though all seven Masters and Five Wardens of last year have left office, and have been replaced by eight, new Wardens and one new Master, only two of whom live in Seattle.
Quite noteworthy, though there has been a significant turnover in these three offices in the past year, the geographic distribution remains about the same as last year — with an emphasis on the fact that still more Masters and Wardens live outside of Seattle than in it. And, in all likelihood, most of our active membership continue to live outside of Seattle rather than in it.
With this knowledge in hand, perhaps we can better manage the purpose and direction of each individual Lodge within our District. Whether yours will follow the path of growth and "long continue" to exist? Or whether it will decline and be forced to merge with another Lodge?
Only time and effort will tell whether indeed "the tenets of our profession (will) be transmitted through your Lodge, pure and unimpaired, from generation to generation."
