Character (February 2004)
I met a character who has been a local legend for several decades. As a child I remember his friends who seemed very different from people I would usually meet. I had the opportunity recently to work on his car. He walked into the service area and informed my service writer that his car would be towed in with a transmission problem. I watched this happen and didn't give it a second thought. He left and I waited for the car. I was informed that this person was J.P. Patches. He seemed normal to me. I later had the chance to talk to him directly and even met his wife. She was a very bright and friendly lady and hard to picture as the wife of a famous clown. He brought the car back because there was a mess in his garage floor caused by residual oil from the cooler line that ruptured. I asked him point blank if I should call him J.P. or by his first name. He said, "call me Chris". At that point I realized that even though his character of J.P. was interesting, he was still a really neat guy. They say that your character is defined by what you would do if no one is watching. I have to remember this and conduct myself in a way that it doesn't matter who sees me. I hope in my later years that I will be remembered so fondly.
