In my first message two months ago, I noted that my emphasis will center on the performance and interpretation of our Standard Work in Stated and Special Communications. This is because this “work” is the foundation for everything we do as Masons. A high level portrayal of our beautiful ritual creates an atmosphere where Brotherly Love can and will prevail. Fraternal Brotherhood is a bond between men who have shared experiences and interests, enabling them to develop a level of trust, the height of which is directly dependant on the quality and quantity of what is shared. My Brothers, I submit that this institution of ours more especially provides us with unique opportunities by informing us of the meanings and landmarks of the inspiring initiation, passing and raising we have all gone through.
By their nature, Freemasons tend to be high-minded, quality individuals. How many members of your own Lodge do you know, or would even recognize the names thereof? With the help of the Secretary, a reasonable goal might be for each of us to learn something about the joys, sorrows, and afflictions of a Brother we don’t know very well, one per month.
Build brotherhood by getting together with your “teammates,” doing things you enjoy together, and becoming proficient at them. We have some examples of this in our district: one lodge excels in competitive sports and games, another in degree work, others in displaying Masonry in front of the community, or generating maximum family involvement and enjoying wonderful culinary arts. The “Fremont Masons” are especially proud of their disposition toward helping others, as we should all try to sacrifice for service. Our Lodge of Research offers the chance to bind knowledge with ideals.
I suggest we all endeavor to share our individual or lodge strengths with others in the district as WB Errol Scott and his Occidental float crew has done, helping Greenwood Lodge win an award at the Seafair Parade. Seize every opportunity for fellowship, especially before and after meetings, and involve everyone possible in what is surely well worth the effort, to have fun being Masons!
Together we can Improve Ourselves in Masonry.
